A sleep disorder (somnipathy) is a medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a person or animal. Some sleep disorders are serious enough to interfere with normal physical, mental and emotional functioning. A test commonly ordered for some sleep disorders is the polysomnography.

When a person suffers from difficulty in sleeping with no obvious cause, it is referred to as insomnia. Insomnia is when a person has any sleep related problems, especially falling asleep, sleep, or waking too early in the morning. All these can be very annoying and can affect the way the rest of the day plays out. This is because when you wake up you are still tired and not rested. For a while, people who suffer from insomnia tend to develop mood disorders, lack of motivation, inability to concentrate, lack of energy, and constantly being tired.

People need adequate sleep to maintain a healthy and productive lives. It has been said that people spend about 1 / 3 of their lifetime sleeping. It really seems like a lot of time but the proper sleep needed for a healthy human body including vital organs and brain. The brain really does work some magic when a person sleeps. Health may deteriorate as the person becomes mentally and physically weaker, becomes more irritable, and develops an awakened immune system which can lead to all kinds of illness.

Sleep occurs in a very unique way. So it is very important that the brain gets its rest so that it can function on a daily basis.

There are different types of insomnia and a variety of reasons, too. Insomnia can be divided into primary and secondary. Primary insomnia means that there is absolutely no medical, physical or emotional reasons for insomnia. Secondary insomnia means that there is a cause of insomnia,be it medical, psychological or physical. Generally, secondary insomnia is treated by doctors and primary insomnia treated with behavioral therapy.

Behavioral therapy often includes things such as sleep hygiene, progressive muscle relaxation, stimulus control, cognitive restructuring, and sleep restriction, and scheduling. These have been very successful in treatment centers across the country.

It is imperative that a person is relaxed before trying to fall asleep. Read a book, watch TV, or anything relaxing is a good start when trying to sleep, but if you lay there and realize you lost all interest in sleeping, get out of bed and do something else until you feel tired again . Lying there, tossing and turning will not do anything but make things worse.
